The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. The Division promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies; undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
  • Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations.
  • Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities; support implementation of UNEP FI’s governance, membership and invoicing policies and processes.
  • Coordinates with Principles for Responsible Investments (PRI), Global Compact and other key stakeholders in Asia Pacific to support cross-industry engagement; update UNEP FI’s regional web pages with initiatives and market developments on sustainable finance.
  • Coordinates with UNEP’s Asia Pacific offices and UN agencies to support mobilization of private sector finance for climate and sustainable development priorities.
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Performs other duties as required.

Education 

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in one of the following: finance, environment, sustainable development, social sciences or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible work experience in the area of partnership development, banking and/or investment, for example in client-facing teams and/or developing sustainable finance activities, or regulatory engagement on sustainable finance, or related area is required. Experience working with the international and/or private finance sector, including with banks, institutional investors, NGOs and others is required. Experience in developing work programs for a variety of private or public stakeholders are desirable. Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable. NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four areas.
